Sorry for the excessive no-show on the podcast. You might have noticed a similar lapse last year around this time, both due to the fact that I am training for a marathon and life does not allow time for training and podcasting so I switch back and forth.

I would love to get the site up and running again but am interested in having other people contribute to the site whether it be “opinion pieces”/”How I see it…”/blog posts or audio recordings of stories.

As you read through my previous posts I’m sure you can get a feel for some of my viewpoints on current trends and management issues so if you feel like these are views you support and would like to contribute and keep this site growing please send me an email with what you have in mind.

The site is still active with 1,500+ listens a month and hundreds of visitors so this is not a lost cause but would love to make this a team operation instead of a one man job.

I found this site while surfing the world wide web and thought it was pretty interesting. Basically, you register with the site entering your hotel name and location and you post your daily info regarding occupancy and rate so that you and your comp set and local hotels can get your info without having to call you, and without you having to call them. It is definitely a way to save time but I think it has some cons which should be considered. Firstly, you may want to check with your management team to confirm they are OK with you sharing that info online, not that you wouldn’t give it out over the phone, but I can see the difference. When you go to the website it lists on the right hand side the recent properties that have signed up and there is a large range of companies listed there so it may have already been approved by those companies, or their overnight teams are just doing it vigilante.
The main concern I have with this way of sharing info is that you lose that personal connection you establish from calling each other every night and passing those few small-talk comments back and forth and building that relationship with the other properties so when the time comes that you need their help, there is a familiar name. I’m sure we can all vouch for how useful it is to have someone willing to help you out at another property because you’ve friended them over the years through 30 second phone calls.

    The Problem With Social Media in the Office

    It’s no secret that social media and networking has become an integral part of the work place and personal life of much of today’s working force. The results of the survey listed on here aren’t surprising, but I think are trending to even higher percentages of company and management involvement. I am of the belief that an employer should not be concerned with what a candidate or any employee does in their personal time- everyone has their own problems and struggles and as long as they are performing their job responsibilities up to par, then that is reason they should be retained. This social networking though is creating a larger gray area though in terms of separating personal life from professional life. I once had a manager many levels higher than me invite me to be their friend on Facebook, and I wasn’t sure what to do since it was my personal page where I am not always so professionally minded, but if I didn’t accept their invite they would know that I declined their virtual friendship and could be seen as insulting. It seems like such a silly way to injure a professional relationship, but at the same time I would hate to jeopardize how they view me based on my personal invitation. I know that ultimately it is my responsibility what information I give out, but I am comfortable saying that I act differently at work than at home. Ultimately, I accepted the invite and luckily I still have a job!
    Sometimes when companies try to dive in to the online world, it feels like they just miss the target, thinking they know how to communicate with the online world just by putting their name out there. For example, there are hotel companies that have Twitter accounts with little to no activity, or Facebook pages for no real reason. I think companies like the idea that there are so many free services out there that they might as well get their name out, but to me, it would hinder my impression of a company for doing a poor job. I think these things work out much better when they are employee-created accounts, which it says that 18% of companies have on Facebook. This makes it more accessible and editable by the employees and maybe a little more down to earth since it can be less “P.C.” I like the idea of grass-roots gatherings and networking without supervision of an employee’s company.
